The IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol is a protocol for achieving deterministic clock synchronization at the precision of a few nanoseconds over Ethernet based Local Area Networks. In other words, it is a protocol for achieving deterministic time synchronization over the Internet. Some of the current Ethernet-based Networks have different frequencies for the network and the local clock. This can be the case of mobile phone networks. In the IEEE 1588-2008 standard, such differences are effectively disregarded. The standard is suitable for use in very wide area network (VAN) environments where the Ethernet interface is used as the signalling interface of the network. To enable this, the IEEE 1588-2008 standard allows the physical layer (CLKIN) of the network to represent the clock of the repeater using the same clock as the physical layer (CLKIN) of the local host, which is the Master Clock of the local host.
In the IEEE 1588-2008 standard, the synchronization is achieved using a beacon protocol. The beacon protocol is used at the initialization of the synchronization. Each time the synchronization is re-established, the network synchronizes to the clock of the previous synchronization. This means that the clock of the slave network is synchronized to the clock of the previous synchronization. The synchronization of the IEEE 1588-2008 standard is robust against clock drift. In fact, each time the synchronization is re-established, the network synchronizes to the clock of the previous synchronization. 827ec27edc
