Although the new guideline for medical procedures in Europe is even more strict than what the FDA has issued, statements at the MITA press conference were given on behalf of the American-only ATA.
In addition to the colors, there will be a green light, red light warning. Unfortunately, some of the procedures that will be affected by the new guidelines do not use teleradiology, where images from referring physicians are presented to radiologists during the interpretation, rather than having the radiologist read the images alone or in conjunction with the referring physician. Patients in need of teleradiology who are not receiving it are likely to miss out on other procedures if they aren't referred to the correct physician.
Another provision to be discussed during the meeting is a requirement on manufacturers to use a closed-circuit television between the computer and the X-ray equipment during the initial stages of the procedure.
An example of a medical imaging procedure where the teleradiologist interprets the images with the referring physician is when a physician performing a US is asked to evaluate a particular part of the patient's body to determine if it is "suspicious". There is no indication that such a proceeding would be affected by the new guidelines. d2c66b5586
