He was a graduate student in geology at the University of Virginia (UVA), where he studied the mechanics and evolution of volcano-tectonic plates. Sumpter was a member of the Sigma Xi professional research society, having earned his master's degree in 1995. He later earned a doctorate in geology from the University of Oklahoma, where he created research programs in plate tectonics and geochemistry. After finishing his doctorate, Sumpter was an assistant professor at the University of Puerto Rico.[5]
In this case, we apply a transformation matrix to the input image, then feed the output back into the next filter. The filter operates on the image after the transformation, and we get the result that we desire. This latter technique, known as a cascade of transformations, is one of the most effective applications of convolution in this type of research, allowing the researcher to focus on specific object categories, such as faces or automobiles, prior to any general object merging. The advantage of this technique is that it allows us to separate and isolate objects within a given image based on their features, then employ the same methodology to merge multiple objects in the next step. We develop a method that orients each object in the image from a list of known object categories at a small resolution. In this work, the entire set of images is run through a deep network consisting of an initial convolutional layer with a 3 x 3 filter size, followed by an FCNN with four layers. We test variations to the initial convolutional layer, such as variations in feature extractors and filter sizes, and find that the final network to the FCNN is the main regulatory step after the initial convolutional filter. The details of our network are discussed in the results section, and we show some examples of the performed segmentation on the test image set.
